Istanbul Bilgi University, Faculty of Law has organized a one-day conference on “International Construction Contracts and Dispute Resolution – Challenges and Opportunities for Turkish Companies”. As is well known, Turkish construction companies are striving for a leading position in the world. According to the Engineering News-Record of 2014, there are 42 Turkish companies among the top 250 international contractors. The nature of large-scale, international construction projects has resulted in international construction contracts having particular features that differentiate them from other commercial contracts. Standard forms of contract have developed which reflect best practices in the construction industry. Along with these forms of contract, the construction industry has favored special methods of resolving disputes arising out of a construction project.

This one-day conference was dedicated to bring construction companies, specialized lawyers and the academia together in order to shed light on selected legal issues of international construction projects from different perspectives. It was aimed at discussing how Turkish Companies can better master the negotiation and drafting as well as the contract and claim management phases. In a separate session, efficient dispute resolution in international construction disputes and the role of arbitration institutions as well as dispute review boards was elaborated on.

The conference was co-organized and jointly sponsored by the Faculty of Law and the WTO Chair of Istanbul Bilgi University, and Schellenberg Wittmer.
